A new show, The Wild Life by Sarah Soward, will be featured throughout October at One Gallery in Hilo. The gallery is at 128 Kilauea Ave. The public is invited to the opening reception on Friday, Oct. 4, from 6-8 p.m.
Soward, best known for her rhino paintings, is exhibiting the start of a new series. The featured work, aptly named The Wild Life, is a collection of small, intimate paintings of wild animals. The list of animals includes rhinoceros (of course), zebra, hartebeest, amakihi, pueo, io, wild horses and more.
Soward’s work is characterized by a painterly love of color, motion, and experimentation. Each painting is made to best suit the subject matter. The flamingo on Lake Naivasha is carved into the impasto paint of the water. The endangered cheetah who can run so fast he’s barely there is painted in light, thin layers. A plump amakihi is fattened further by multiple layers of paint for feathers. The rhino, Soward’s favorite, is shrunk to flower size and given a background of glowing sunshine.
This new work by Sarah “The Rhino Lady” Soward can be seen seven days a week, along with works by a variety of island-based artists.
